2019 Drought-Tolerant Plant Presentation & Sale

Mark your calendars: The 2019 drought-tolerant plant presentation and sale are on their way! The plant presentation will happen at 11:00 AM on September 14, 2019, in the Coso Room of the Maturango Museum, 100 East Las Flores Avenue, Ridgecrest.

Ann Richardson, former horticulturalist at Huntington Botanical Gardens, will again give a slide presentation about plants that will be available at the Eastern Kern County Resource Conservation District’s (EKCRCD’s) 2019 plant sale, which will take place on October 26, 2019, at the Desert Empire Fairgrounds (520 S. Richmond Rd., Ridgecrest). Ann will be available after the presentation to field questions about drought-tolerant plants and their care.

This year EKCRCD will feature 17 new plants, like Saguaro and Mexican blue palm, in addition to perennial favorites like ‘Brakelights’ Crimson Yucca and Texas rangers. We will also have some hard-to-find natives like creosote bush and winterfat.

Like last year plant order lists will be available at the plant presentation. Take two lists and, as you see the plant pictures pop up on the screen, mark your choices and quantities on both lists. Then before you leave you can turn in one copy to the EKCRCD box or volunteer and keep one copy for yourself.  When you pick up your order on Saturday, October 26, you may pay by cash, check, or money order. All orders are subject to availability at the time of delivery from Mountain States Wholesale Nursery; we will do our best to fulfill your order.

If you are unable to attend the presentation, plant order lists will also be available after September 14, 2019, at the Maturango Museum, Indian Wells Valley Water District (500 W. Ridgecrest Blvd., Ridgecrest), and BLM (300 S. Richmond Rd., Ridgecrest). The order list, with links to plant pictures, will be available online after September 14, 2019. Mountain States Wholesale Nursery’s plant catalog is always available to peruse, at

Order forms must be returned to EKCRCD by October 4, 2019. If you do not turn them in at the plant presentation, you may email them or a list of your choices (be sure to include sizes and quantities) to (redacted), or drop them off at the EKCRCD office, which is located inside the BLM, 300 S. Richmond Road, Ridgecrest. EKCRCD office hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-noon. For more information, see or call EKCRCD (760-384-5477 during office hours).
