Jan. 10, 2026, 1-2:30 pm at Maturango Museum: Sean Scruggs, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Fort Independence Indian Reservation, will speak on the traditional cultural landscape and maintenance of natural habitats.

EKCRCD hosts Native American speaker Sean Scruggs for the Certified Backyard Habitat education series at the Maturango Museum on Jan 10, 2026 from 1:00-2:30pm. He will spoeak on "The Traditional Cultural Landscape and Maintenance of Natural Habitats - A View from a Local Native American Perspective." Mr. Scruggs is the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Fort Independence Indian Reservation near Independence, CA. A veteran of the US. Air Force, Sean now works with federal and state agencies as a tribal advocate for the protection of traditional cultural landscape. He will be speaking on his tribal history with nature and how his culture views the value of the natural world and efforts needed to restore nature's balanced biodiversity. Sean invites the audience to ask questions and participate in discussion at the end of the talk. More information will also be available on the Eastern Kern County Resource Conservation District's (EKCRCD) Certified Resilient Backyard Habitat Program at the end of the event.
